Nursery decor and accessories at Acorn & Pip, a kid's concept store
What are children's toy crates used for?
Toy crates are one of the most practical and versatile pieces of children's storage — open-top containers that make toys accessible and visible to children, encourage independent play, and make tidying up genuinely quick. A crate on a low shelf or the floor is something a 2-year-old can manage themselves.
What materials are your crates made from?
We stock crates in natural wood, powder-coated metal, and woven materials — each durable, attractive, and designed to look good in a home rather than just a playroom. Our crates are built to last from toddler years through to school age and beyond, adapting as the contents change.
What size crate do I need?
This depends on what you're storing. Smaller crates suit building blocks, soft toys, and arts and crafts. Larger crates work well for bulkier items like balls, outdoor toys, and dress-up. Our range covers several sizes — come into the Huddersfield store and we can help you work out the right size for your space and your child's toys.
Are toy crates better than toy boxes with lids?
Open crates are generally more practical for young children — they can see what's inside and access it without lifting a heavy lid. Lidded boxes tend to become dumping grounds. Open crates displayed on shelves at children's height are one of the hallmarks of a Montessori-inspired playroom and genuinely encourage more purposeful play.
Can I see the crates in your Huddersfield store?
Yes — we stock a selection at Acorn & Pip, 6–7 Carr Lane, Slaithwaite, Huddersfield HD7 5AN. Seeing crates in person is the best way to judge size and whether they'll suit your space. Open Sunday to Wednesday 9am–4pm and Thursday to Saturday 9am–5pm.
